Diwali Digital Sparklers / 2015

Digital Sparklers (aka Painting With Light) is an interactive installation that allows multiple participants to 'paint' on a video screen using the supplied torches or other light sources, such as mobile phones. The piece was commissioned by Leicester City Council to be part of the Diwali celebrations in Cossington Park on 1st November 2015. The commission was managed by local arts company Inspirate.

Technology

Digital Sparklers was developed using Cycling 74's Max and runs on a moderate-specification Mac or PC with a webcam. It is based on a light-tracking Max patch originally written by Sean Clark around 5 years ago, and now enhanced to work in a wider range of lighting conditions. The lights used with the installation consist of white LED torches with custom 3D printed light diffusers attached to them.
